my files to a DVD and still access them as I would a CD?? DVDs have so nuch more available space, but I don't know if they can be used like a CD. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
13642 Colleen, I use a external hard drive for mine and back them up on it - but a DVD would work fine - I also have mine on a hard drive that is an extra that my husband had built into my PC - that I use for back up of my files - that I use for nothing but my back up. *4U
89901 Put an external Hard Drive on your Christmas wish list. I believe you would like it & I like this method rather than CD or DVD. *
53767 You sure can. That's one of the ways that I back mine up. However, like CDs, DVDs won't last forever, but then neither will I! *4U
19731 Yes. I do it--especially with my video and music files. I can get all my embroidery files onto 1 CD, but I leave most of them zipped.
7177 yes you can, many moore design on a dvd.and you can open them the same!
51363 Yes, every time my son visits he puts my new designs, if any, on a DVD. You can load a lot more onto a DVD.

Thanks so much! I knew you could put more data on a DVD, I just wasn't sure if you could access it the same way you do on a CD.
6418 Yes you can. Also a external harddrive is helpful. I use the flashdrives only for transport.

I backup on external harddrive and CD's because I don't have a DVD burner. An external drive can also crash.

I was thinking like Iris2006. That an external drive, can crash too. That is why I thought of a DVD. I thought it would be more stable.
317 if you use yahoo mail then you can e mail files to yourself and then save them in the files that way even if your puter crashes your designs are all safe as you only need to log into yahoo to get them again, as soon as i recieve any zip file i automaticaly post to myself and then transfer and mark as read . doing this i have never lost a zipped design and do not forget you can actually zip your own designs and send them the same way. hope this will help those who would hate to loose those wonderfull designs that we have paid for annie in the UK

I hadn't thought of that, but I have over 1.5 GB of files. I doubt yahoo would allow me to use that kind of space. I know they say "unlimited" but isn't 1.5 GB a bit extreme?
1778 I, too, have an external drive to back up files. Of course it can crash like anything else. I DO use a very large flash drive to hold back ups...arranged just like the external drive & I have a file on the desktop labeled "files to be backed up" so I only do the backup once a week to the flash drive. After I put the file on the external drive, I put it in that file for backing up later. IF the external drive crashes I still have all the files on the flash drive or if the flash goes, I still have them on the external. SURELY they wouldn't both go at the same time! The flash was so much cheaper than a second external. I don't like taking up computer space for my sewing files as both I & my hubby use the computer for other things. Just be sure you have them in TWO places at least! I'm still moaning over the lose of hundreds of files I had in only one place!

Thanks for the advice! I will look into an external hard drive. It IS agood idea to have them on a flash drive, as well!

I know they won't, but I back my files up regularly, so The DVD should not be in horrible shape by the time I back them up on a new disc.
