We have our projects corner with this
marvellous, impressing, pretty, perfect and
inspiring things we are so proud of- or let
me say: you are so proud of, I surely will
not be part of this EVER.
;-))
But what about the unfinished, frustrating
and hateful things we put so much energy in
and did not finish? This would be a place I
could take part of ;-))
Maybe someone has an input to save such a
botch-
sometimes you can not think outside the box
while sitting in it.
I want to start this with my 3 year old
attempt of an advent countdown calendar.
The idea came from an 60s german patchwork
book. The cat should seem to come out of a
basket (this is a pocket) and the design
originally was meant for a childs apron.
The embellishment were buttons and rickrack
from my grannys sewing box, as a child I
spent hours with this, stringing button
chains while granny chroched baby jackets
for a bazar.
Love this keepsake- she is dead now for
years and I still miss her so much.
The plan for the project:
just quilt in the ditch, put sweets in the
pockets, get ready for christmas.
18966 Eva this is not a failed project. It is a UFO. Oh you should finish it, because it will be gorgeous. Your Idea about GOOF UP. Oh boy I hope Veronika doesn’t see this. She would have to increase the bandwidth due to my postings. I have numerous UFOs as well. There is always something more fun to do and the current project has become boring.
7292 If this is your problem project, I never
want to put my things next to yours ! My
'goofs' would shut down the
system, and send loads of you to the ER
from hysteria!!!!!!!

But I love the idea :)
my first childrens fabric book turned out
to be 14" thick!!! Had to buy a wagon
4 her to carry it in!!

Hee hee hee, so she got 2 Christmas presents, a book AND a wagon, hee hee hee, love it! Hugs, Marji
730 Oh my - I would need a full page all to myself for all my "Goofs" - I have a box full !!! I would neva part with them though - don't know why - I suppose I'm a "Goof Collecter"

My favourite cartoon is about a lady at a
fabric store, she is looking at all the
wonderful stuff and in her mind (thinking
balloon over her head) you see all the
wonderful things she is imagining to do
with: ball gowns and robes, the most
complicated items.
Last picture is of her sofa, buried under
huntreds of easy done squared pillows.
This is me.
Goofy corner will have sequels.

Hee hee hee, me too!! Hee hee hee, still giggling over this one! Hugs, Marji

2653 You can certainly still just stitch in the ditch. If you wanted to you could put a bead of Fray Check along the raw edge of the kitty's neck that is inside the pocket. You could also stitch up against where you sewed down the pockets if you wanted to. It is a lovely quilt and you mustn't stuff it away, just call it your creative genius at work. There are no steps when you do an original. That's what I say anyway! You could hand embroider whiskers on using 4 threads of floss and don't leave it loose. Just do a running stitch.;)

There are no steps when you do an
original.
No rules!
Thanks for this idea. I will stitch this as
a small wallhanging (or framed picture) and
put it to the wall against my workig space,
so I can see it all the time I'm
thinking.
This is what makes me crazy about the
project. I spent HOURS with thinking about
it and it turned ...grrr... -- not well.
54357 This is for those who want to give this
project a try (let's go, Karen!)
It was before I knew about machine
applique, so it is a template for freezer
paper and satin stitching after cutting and
ironing.
the paws on the pocket are just sketches
for positioning
the second pic is the original drawing from
1968 book.
still copyrighted, so this is a quote from:

Thank you! I am thinking maybe I could manage one block. As I look at your quilt pictures again I am noticing what nice colors you selected and how cat-like some of the fabric is. Particularly a gray one near the middle where the fabric print really looks like cat fur.
by beeboomer 13 Sep 2009
In case anyone missed it, if you click on Eva's picture it opens up bigger in a new window and if you click again it gets even bigger.
by marjialexa 14 Sep 2009
Thanks SO much for this pattern!!! I could really have fun with this! Hugs, M
18966 This is so cute! I went and looked at the
picture first, (step 5!) and I
couldn't imagine how you called it a
goof. After reading the rest of your
information I still wouldn't call it a
goof, maybe a challenge? People have given
you some good suggestions. Maybe you could
do a stipple on the background fabric
without the buttons being in the way? It
looks like your have done most of the work
already. Your situation could really help
others think about the steps and the order
they should be done in.
I also like your idea of a special place
for goofs and mistakes, and UFOs.
(unfinished objects) I am one of those that
has trouble finishing things. I get bogged
down with each and every decision that has
to be made.
Much good luck, and we look forward to
seeing this in the completed beautiful
projects corner.
by evajungermann 13 Sep 2009
Oh thank you so much!
Now I know we had postings about this!!
UFO, I did not understand, now I know.
And (brainwave!!!) the mnemonic of all
those UFO researchers is : we are not
alone!!! That is great. Thank you!!
by marjialexa 14 Sep 2009
Hee, hee, hee, Eva, I just love the way you think! We are not alone, indeed! Hugs, Marji
1113 Oh, Eva, this is a fabulous work!! I love it!! I took a good look at what you've done, and imagine doing it with my Mother's leftover rickrack, etc. and material from her stash. She, too, has been gone these many years, and I still have her button box I used to play with. What great memories! And of course, I adore kitties, so yours is purrfect, hee hee hee. Ok, for the bodies inside the pockets that aren't finished, could you run a bead of fabric paint to seal the raw edge of the body? You'd have to hold the pocket open till it dried, obvoiusly, but that would both seal and finish that edge. And don't take their little faces off! Were you going to do the whiskers in hand embroidery, or tack down more of the leftover embellishments from your granny? If hand embroidery, you could possibly do this after you machine quilt ( I know how much you love this idea, hee hee hee) the piece. Just add the rest of the sashing, like Bikermom said, and stitch in the ditch. Your foot won't get near the button eyes (unless you get awfully wild, Eva). You could hand embroider the whiskers through the finished quilt, which would give dimension to the cats as well. Or, you could use your machine and tack the findings from Granny on as whiskers before you quilt it. This is way too pretty a project to let lie. I know what you mean about getting the steps "out of step", hee hee hee. I do that all the time, thinking to finish something faster, then paint myself into a corner. Good luck, let us know how this goes. I think the part I can see is just super!!! The grandkids who use it will not be as much of a perfectionist as we are, Eva, they'll never know in your eyes it "didn't turn out right", they'll just be thrilled! Hugs, Marji
by evajungermann 13 Sep 2009
For the whiskers I thought of a french
knot, leaving a large amount of thread
before clipping- but this material will
hang down and make kitties look sad-
I could starch it- will that work?
or I take some hairs out of my horse hair
broom- but how to fasten it?
PROBLEMS over PROBLEMS.
Also thought about some hairdressing,
adding fake fur to the heads and the ears
are boring, need some pink fabric paint or
so.
OK best advice: not wanna be a
perfectionist.
This I have to stitch on my forehead
Thank you so much!
by marjialexa 14 Sep 2009
Eva, for whiskers on cats I use what we here in USA call "carpet thread", because it was originally used to sew pieces of carpet together. It's a very very heavy thread, I get it in brown and black. For a wall hanging like this, I would use wax to stiffen it even more, or perhaps use the bits of leftover WSS, make a paste, and stiffen the whiskers with that. If you want to use the horse-hairs, how about sewing on a little bead, and gluing the horse hair into the hole in the bead to hold it? The part about being a perfectionist, that I can't help you with, I'm struggling with that myself, hee hee hee. I waste more time looking for the "perfect" 2 inch piece of material, I get nothing finished! Hugs, Marji
22363 Good idea. But with all these wonderful Cuties around they c my goofs 4 what it really is - my learning curve.
by evajungermann 14 Sep 2009
Wow, I whish I could be this patient with
myself.
Thanks, this is something I really have to
work on.....

18166 I sure hope you are successful at using
your second option for this project. It is
just too nice not to use for something!
I read your story about your mishaps, and I
have to say, it sounds like a story that I
could have written MANY times in the past.
I have a tendency to rush through and not
think of all possibilities, first. I coold
be a major contributor to the failed
projects thread!
by evajungermann 14 Sep 2009
Thank you,
do you have a project you THOUGHT being a
goof and it turned out great?
For example: Planning to sew a wedding
dress and ended with pretty satin
cushions?
Anything that gives HOPE?
;-))
13635 Wow Eva, I wish my "goofs" turned
out as full of potential as yours! Mine
pretty much end in the trash....YOU GO
GIRL!
Blessings!
2499 I don't know if this is a good idea or not (heehee) there is not enough room for all my goofs. It would bog down the internet!!
by evajungermann 13 Sep 2009
Just need a little comfort.
I never end a project with the words
"Wow, I'm a genius"- I
always end with "This you could have
done better".
And when I click through the projects
section I think I am surrounded by
geniuses. That's a bit of frustrating
;-)
4299 I tucked down the seams with decorative
stitches.
Why didn't I do that after basting?
Nobody knows.
I could not stand their bare and naked
faces, so I embellished them completely
before quilting. Why?
Why did I sew the pockets to it this stage
of construction? Would have been better at
last to bind the quilt with this too.
My big mistake: not taking one step at a
time but taking step 5 before step 2 was
done.
They need to have whiskers- will those be
enough binding for the quilt?
And at last: now I maneuvered myself into
the corner and to finish it I would have to
MACHINE QUILT and all the buttons will
stuck with the presser foot-
Do you see an option not to snip off all
their faces?
And I do not like knowing about the raw
edges of the bodies in the pockets. When
filled you might see this. Do I have to put
on a kind of "shutter loop"?
Lost fun, got tired- silly mistakes caused
by impatience.

Eva - I agree with everyone else just go
for it. What a fantastic idea you have
going. Love the fact that you are using
some of your Grandmother's findings,
too. I feel that I'm like you in so
many ways as I too, quite frequently, jump
the gun in wanting to get something
finished right NOW! I have so many
projects that await completion because I
didn't have time to finish when I
started and have found something else I
feel is equally or more exciting. I made
myself a promise the other day to try to
complete one of my unfinished projects
before I started on another one. That day
I did four completions and haven't
finished anything since. But I have
started two or three new projects. Stop
this insaneness!!!
Love your advent calendar!!!!!!!!
18966 evajungermann, I agree with bikermomfl, do
a stitch in the ditch top quilting for
panels and maybe a decorative stitch on
border pieces. I think this looks great and
should be completed. Where did you get the
pattern for this? It is adorable.
Judy Mc
1593 I think it looks adorable and would love to have the pattern to make this. being mom to '7' completely spoiled and adored felines this looks great. Just add your borders, looks great, and then just quilt with stitch in the ditch and then it won't affect the buttons at all and will be just adorable, personally I think it looks great!

You are so right- thank you!
Will you show something??? ;-))
